Leaving the European Union - How?

What are the mechanisms for departing the European Union and is there a mechanism for explusion if you failed to uphold the Copenhagen criteria?

Just wondering, not planning on becoming a Euro sceptic or owt.

Not sure King. It's very difficult to get out of Internationally recognised Treaties once you've signed them. However, I think that there were some sort of "get out" mechanisms written into the, (for the time being) rejected European Constitution.

I stand corrected. It seems that leaving isn't so difficult afterall.
(apart from having to agree terms that is)

if for example the EU forced a common corporate tax rate then we would seriously have to consider leaving = we could always then become an EEA member (aka Iceland and Norway) and then we dont actually lose a lot.

That shoudn`t be too difficult. Start passing laws which are in contradiction to the EU-laws, e.g. reintroduce the death penalty, start treating citizens from other EU-countries like any other foreigners, don`t pay the membership fees.

Sooner rather than later you would be excluded.

BTW There is no pan EU policy on how to treat fellow EU citizens. Let us all jump together on this one or not at all.
