Saddam in Iraqi custody - excution likely within 24 hours

The Iraqi Government has just confirmed that Saddam Hussein is now in their custody, following many hours of denial that this was the case. It is now expected that Saddam will be executed within the next 24 hours, as Eid al-Adha (the festival of the sacrifice) beings tomorrow.

His execution will not be announced until after the event, an effort to minimise any violent uprising.

It might delay the violence but it wont minimise it or prevent it

Whatever one`s opinions of the death penalty are, if anyone deserves to be hanged, Saddam is certainly that one.

A completely another matter is whether Saddam`s imminent demise will create a martyr-culture. Perhaps it would have been wiser to keep him alive as an old and berserk man and let him rot in a cell sized 1m*1m without any light shining in.

    Saddam to be executed

I thought he was at the Hague.?
If this is true it is utter madness. the civil war which is currently raging in Iraq will certainly intensify. There will certainly be reprisals. Not just massacres of Shias but american body bags flying home as well in the following weeks.

Saddam`s death sentence was handed down by an Iraqi court. Of course, many people will say it was nothing but a puppet-court. I don`t agree. The court could have ruled otherwise but it chose to hang Saddam, which is what he certainly deserves.

The most important thing right now is that the US and Britain withdrew from Iraq. Some say it would open the gates for a civil war. Probably so, but stopping that from happening is no excuse for the continuing occupation which was illegal in the first place.

Both those things are already happening on a daily or near-daily basis.

As a country opposed to the death penalty I think the government should voice its oppossition to this proposed murder.
As the post above illustrates, the whole thing is a sham and a farce of monumnetal porportions.
