Avril Doyle scuppers Taoiseach's grubby little plan

Alas it seems Avril Doyle’s latest attempt to scupper an audacious PR stunt by an Taoiseach in Europe has failed. It would seem "the most cunning and devious of them all" has been involved in a grubby scheme to wangle an invitation to address the European Parliament just before the expected May Election.

According to the Examiner: "The Taoiseach was one of seven European leaders invited to address the parliament on November 29 in a speech designed to outline his views on how to proceed with the ratification of the EU constitution

However, Hans Gert Pottering, the leader of the biggest political group in the parliament, the European People’s Party (EPP), proposed withdrawing the invitation to Mr Ahern last Thursday because the speaking engagement is too close to the next election

It is understood Mr Pottering’s intervention followed consultations with Avril Doyle, the leader of Fine Gael’s delegation at the parliament, who told him it was inappropriate to give Mr Ahern such a high-profile international forum to speak to so close to an election."

Clearly another case of Fine Gael Putting Politics First

Maximus, I deleted the thread as it was identical to this one, there is no need for two threads on the same issue.

Then another user acted in concert with him, the moderator deleted the thread I created, while SPN re-wrote it. I’ve opened a thread in the E&D section to discuss posting / mod guidelines, this is the second instance of a Mod abusing their power in as many weeks.

The reason is fair enough, but perhaps in future you might check the timelines, my thread was created a good 10 minutes before this one.

FF fumes over 'insult' to Ahern ahead of EU parliament address
"This has been taken out of context. He did not ask for the invitation to be withdrawn," EPP spokesman Robert Fitzhenry said.

He confirmed Mr Poettering did ask that any future requests not be sent to leaders facing an election.

    .....

According to Mr Fitzhenry, Mr Poettering, who is expected to take over as president of the assembly in January, has been caught up in a pre-election clash between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. "There is no personal issue with Bertie Ahern, the issue is much broader than that and the problem is a deeper European political one," the EPP spokesman said. "A year ago, all 25 leaders were invited to the parliament as part of a bid to get the constitution back on track, but only Belgium's Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and Mr Ahern replied."

The FFailures are trying to spin this as a story, when in actual fact it is a storm in a teacup.

    Would ye ever grow up!
