Pre-Nup agreements: FG lead the way, PDs follow

senator fergal browne of fine gael has been leading the debate on the recognition of pre-nuptial agreements in the oireachtas over the last few months. he did research on it over the summer and turned up on a lot of radio stations discussing it with various lawyer types. he has drafted a bill on it also.

in the short-term he has triggered a debate in the seanad today (see here) - and lo and behold, within hours of browne announcing his bill etc, mcdowell has announced he is setting up a committee to look into the issue - see here

although the committe will probably be another mcdowell fudge (like the civil and domestic partnership one) at least its progress.

fine gael leads, and the pds follow - and not for the first time this year on the law reform issue. remember the homeowner protection thing? fine gael propose changes, and tom morrisey (ie mcdowell) scramble to follow suit

What would you prefer? PDs don't take on good ideas?

You didn't. There's just an implied criticism in saying "FG lead the way, PDs follow".

Perhaps my reading was incorrect. Apologies.

Is it just me or should the relevant point be that a FG member of the Seanad has gone off breaking his back on an issue he sees as important and MMcD has stolen his thunder by taking presumably the initial drafts of his bill, giving it to his civil servants and saying have a look at that there and bring me back a bill I can introduce in the Dáil before the next election.

If I was the Seanadóir in question I would be a bit put out.

Instead of it being FG lead and PD's follow - it's a case of FG do the hard work and present another potential feather in the government's cap.
Those who think they know it all upset those of us that do.........

A good idea is a good idea. Should FG not be happy that one of their ideas has been taken on board by McD.

If FG had any sense they would concentrate on telling the public that it was initially their idea and not waste their time whinging that the PDs "stole" their good idea.

In fairness, man, if this is the level that FG members are going down to to find something to brag about.......
