Merle is essentially correct ( though himself and stringjack need an intensive round of negotiations). The 'consent principle' is a colonial ploy to sanitise colonial occupation i.e 'they want us here' but the problem is that the 'they' is an artificial colonial construct. From the fitzgerald point of view consent was a convienient abstraction to hide behind to deflect attention away from the fact of his inertia in securing the unity of the island. Afterall his father, whom he regularly reminds us of, was in the GPO in 1916 killing people in the name of the legitimacy of that end. DeValera was no better because like FG they only organised in the 26 counties underlining their partitionist outlook concerning national unity.
