Bailey to join Barrett and Regan on Fine Gael Dun Laoghaire

Fine Gael Councillor John Bailey will contest the General Election in Dun Laoghaire – he was added to the ticket following a recent meeting of the Fine Gael Executive Council.

Councillor Bailey will represent Fine Gael in Dun Laoghaire along with Former Minister Seán Barrett and Councillor Eugene Regan, who was recently elected Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

Proof if ever it was needed that FG have no master-plan for election 2007, Bailey is a dreadful candidate. Can FG not do the electoral maths ?

Can those of you who understand proportional representation more than me explain how running three candidates when your best chance is two seats helps you?

    Look at DNC in 2002!
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

It is a higher risk strategy alright but I can see where they are coming having done the maths on DL a long time ago. You have the countries highest turnout and the highest proportion of swing voters. There will be a shift in votes putting the second FF seat under pressure. The Regan vote will pressurise the Blackrock/Foxrock PD hardcore, Bailey has a very loyal following that pure snobbery in the party fails to appreciate. He is a bloody hard worker and will outpoll, in my opinion, Regan in a head-to-head. Barrett is almost home and dry – you cannot underestimate the esteem with which he is held in Ballybrack/Killiney, he half owns the place electorally. Look at his numbers in election storm through generals and locals. It may be ten years since he stood but if its an energetic campaign then there is a seat for him. It is also more than possible that Hanafin will take votes from her own running mate as she has been very impressive over her 9 years as a rep nationally. If that happens and a large percentage of Andrews transfers are dead rubbers then things get interesting. Gilmore and Hanafin are the only certainties.

At least it stops Bailey from leaving and running as an independent, which would of brought down the pact in the council.

True nobody underestimates Barrett,he is a strong candidate,it will be interesting

You're having a laugh, Bailey is an excellent candidate!

2,189 first preferences in the Local Elections, an ezcellent worker with a strong GAA record being former County Board Chairman. He will do well, this is a very strong FG ticket that'll wipe out O'Malley & seriously push Andrews and Cuffe

But not excellent enough to make the ticket by himself.
