It's quite clear EK is talking out of both sides of his mouth. He needs to call Sargent a liar, fire Frank Flannery and say that FG will no do business with SF, or else say that FF was right and that it is an option he wold consider.

Every minute that this story is top of the agenda, makes EK look more and more foolish.

Incorrect, every mention of this in the media is good for FG.

Sure - that Kenny wouldn't sit down with SF - there's no dispute about that.

The question is whether he wanted the Greens to sit down with SF and report back to him.

That way, if the SF demands were too high Enda could wash his hands of the whole business with no damage done. If news leaked out, the Greens would take the flak from the outraged law and order brigade.

Let's not forget Sargent screeching across the Dail when he made a pact with the devil that Kenny should've been prepared to work with SF. How can he get away with playing it both ways.

The SF issue, simply is not an issue. The Mail keep reporting it as it was their story originally whilst FF/GP are really struggling to avoid a monumental hiding on Friday
Both ways? Rubbish. FF don't have an army council anymore and there was no moral reason not to do business with them.

You wish that the FG/SF story was a non-issue. It wasn't a non-issue for Mr Flannery a short few days ago!

FG really need to come clean, or at least get their story straight on the matter.

i wouldn't call the timing interesting. It is, after all, election week!

This shows FG are moving a little bit more left.

In what way is the fact that Kenny was trying to do a deal with Sinn Fein good for Fine Gael?

I would imagine any Fine Gael supporter would be very dismayed and disappointed that Kenny would ever entertain a government of which he would be leader being supported by Sinn Fein from the outside.

If I am wrong about that then maybe Fine Gael have moved much further away from their traditional base than anybody would have thought.

Things must be desperate for the Greens if at this stage they are willing to buy into this FF nonsense, in order to stave off what they see coming down the line.

Its more than a bit pathetic that Sargent will do FF's dirty work for them like this.
Its a free country, and he can do what he wants, which logically extends to allying with his coalition master against the opposition, but at the same time, pathetic.

Is it possible to get the wording of what Trevor Sargent said in the Dail that day? I think it was the day in 2007 when Bertie was elected Taoiseach subsequent to the 07 GE.

From my memory, Sargent was quite vocal stating that it was his desire to do business with SF. The barrier was that Enda Kenny refused that prospect completely.

If memory serves me correctly, Trevor Sargent said that EK was NOT putting the country first by refusing to a deal with SF. He made reference to the coalition government in the 40's.

Trevor Sargent has made to my understanding, two contradicting statements on the eve of the election monotorium, so to avoid proper scrutiny.

Ultimately EK refusing to do business with SF resulted in Trevor Sargent having to resign as leader and lose any prospect of ever becoming a senior minister. Serious sour grapes on his part.

SF are good enough for government up north, but not in the Republic? Bit of a double standard? Anybody who thinks this is an issue is a person who does not agree with the peace process.

Rubbish, a distance from the provos is one of he few positiove selling points for FG, take it away and they are back to having their fate determined by Fianna Fail's popularity. IF FF (or Global conditions) turn the economy around, there is one less reason for voting for FG.

Also EK now looks even more clueless than usual.
