New Work Permit rules and Fine Gael

It was reported by the Irish Times today that Ms Siobhan O'Donoghue of Migrants Rights Centre of Ireland claimed that Fine Gael as a party were opposed to the introduction of the new Work Permit rules for migrants out of the EU. Is this correct and if so, what are the reasons for opposing it ?

MRCI director Siobhán O’Donoghue said she had asked the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment to postpone the introduction so that a review of its implications could take place.

" The new stricter conditions that are being placed on migrants wanting to come to Ireland [from 1-6-09] are to be welcomed, but why did the Government not implement this measure 12 or 18 months ago?" he asked.'

Comment: If FG are serious about forming the next Government, they can't afford to be seen as flip-floppers.

FG should support the broad thrust of these changes. They have nothing to gain from bleeding-heart liberalism in the midst of a depression.

Don't try to hold your breath! Getting clarity on something like this where a political party wants to be all things to all voters is going to prove difficult. Siobhan O'Donoghue is just talking it up to put pressure on FG in the hope they run scared; after all, her job depends on the pc bullcrap she comes out with.
