The way I see it, the reasons why I would want Fianna Fail out are

    a) I disagree with their centre right policies.

When I apply the same criteria to Fine Gael, I get

    a) I disagree with their centre right policies.
    b) They may be incompetent. Its hard to know for sure until they have the reigns of power, but some of their main players don't inspire confidence.
    c) They have a slight smell of corruption about them.

The addition of George Lee to the party goes a long way towards addressing my concerns in (b). He's someone who knows his subject, and has a proven track record, and would be a great addition to Irish politics.
Even without Lee, quite frankly b) and c) clearly clinch it for FG for a voter in your position - added to which, if FG get in, it will be with a strong Labour coalition partner thereby neutralising at the least, a) from the point of view of FG.

I am sick of people comparing FF and FG and through application of rational criteria, coming up with a clear madate to vote FG and then saying "so I won't be voting for FG". It's plain thick.

I'm not grasping at anything just pointing out the interesting tidbit that this is far from his first chance to run for FG but he only jumps on the bandwagon now. If I was an FGer I'd question his commitment .... but maybe that's just me.

How often do people complain about nepotism and the standard of cadidates running for the Dail.

One would have thought that there would be widespread acclaim for the decision of one of Ireland's leading economists to run for the Dail?

What do some of your people want; another small town solictor, an auctioneer, a teacher, a pub owner etc?

    Actually no.

You want people to judge you by your ability and track record.

Not sure working the Treasury Dept in Bank of Albania counts...
Mr Gormley described calls for the resignation of his cabinet colleague as "absolute nonsense". He said Mr Lenihan was doing "a very good job under exceptionally difficult circumstances".

Not your father's track record? Is it just a coincidence that so many of our candidates are the children of TDs?

Would young Mr Brennan be even considered if his name was not Brennan?

That actually might be more relevant for this state than working in the fed.

perhaps they would prefer a career politician coming from the Seanad or the son of a former TD!

And while FG have gained 3% from FF, Labour have gained more.
And may be more transfer friendly.

But Dublin South is as blue stocking and shirts as they come.

Bizarely the best realistic outcome for FF is for FG to take Dublin South and Labour to take Dublin Central. We shall see.
