Donegal Councillor Doherty quits Fine Gael to run as independent

West Donegal Councillor Padraig Doherty has quit Fine Gael and has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate in the Glenties area in June's local elections.

He was dropped by the party despite serving 10 years on the county council - fellow councillor Terence Slowey described the party's decision as a shock.

Councillor Doherty says he was shafted by the party which canceled its Glenties Electoral Area convention and opted instead to select the candidates by way of interview.

Speaking to Highland Radio today Councillor Doherty was heavily critical of Fine Gael.

Doherty always seemed to be a good man and I think he was doing a good job.

Doherty seems to be really p***d off, I was at convention in Donegal Town in January that was Chaired by lovely Joe Mc Hugh TD who thought he was being smart saying " at least in FG we have Conventions", well surprise ,surprise they dont in the Glenties area.
Democracy in FG doesnt exist, the OMOV system is for collecting money to keep Tom Curran in a job and Enda in restlying his hair.

Sounds a little but more like the feeling is that FG left him rather than the other way around.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.
