Mitchell was questioned - but released - in the investigation into Veronica Guerin's murder. One of the Mitchell brothers was a Minister for Justice at the same time as his cousins' criminal enterprise was flooding the city with heroin.

The above is largely a statement of fact, but it is laced with the worst sort of cowardly innuendo that has become par for the course on this website.
George Mitchell is a first cousin of Gay and the late Jim and also to many other Mitchells less well known.
He has been/is/and presumbaly will continue to be associated with alleged organised crime in this jurisdiction and internationally. There was press coverage during the early stages of the investigation of Veronica Guerin's killing that George Mitchell was a suspect amongst of cast of hundreds I'm sure.
Jim Mitchell served as Minister for Justice is the first FitzGerald adminstration (June 1981 to February 1982), it is fair to say tht history will judge it as fairly unremarkable stint in office but it was marked by the beginning of a sustained period of law reform with new legislation enacted in the areas of the Law of Juries, Family Law and a new Criminal Justice Act devoted to rape.
It is also fair to say that the early 1980's saw Dublin's heroin problem reach a crisis point.
But none of the above facts are at issue here, its a not about facts, its about smear, and smear of the dead (be they FG, SF, Clann na Talun who cares).
The implication is that the Mitchell Family and in particular Gay and I assume Patsy (on behalf of her late husband) have to justify themselves because of familial association with the Penguin. I find that implication nauseating I have to say.
It doesn't matter that George Mitchell is estranged from the Mitchell family, maybe our troll friend even knows this fact (its widely known and not surprising), but maybe others here don't so its worth mentioning.
The implication, reasonable and clear from the above post, is that Jim Mitchell as Minister for Justice facilitated in some way the organised crime operations of his cousin George. Thats what I read from it.
When are the moderators on this site going to nail people for making such scandalous allegations?
As someone who worked with Jim Mitchell for two years up to his death, I find it hard to believe that anyone could believe such an allegation, if you knew Jim, if you walked the North Inner City with him three evenings a week for twelve months, if you saw him haul his crippled body up and down Corporation flat complexes when he should have been in a Hospice (its where anyone else would have been) you never say he facilatated drug dealers or he was somehow vicariously responsible for the wrecking ball that heroin had taken to parts of the city.
The one thing that sickens me about this site is that anyone can come on here and traduce someone's good name with impunity.
Its not so long ago since a known FF troll came on here and accused Phil Hogan of breaching the Official Secrets Act as Minister for State, an indictable offence which can carry a sentence of ten years imprisonment!
Its not just politics.ie that suffers from this "mousepad bravery", I had occassion recently to intervene on behalf of the family of the late FG Senator Billy Fox, when comments of a grossly offensive nature were posted about him on a website published by Ogra Fianna Fail. The comments were so bad that had they got public currency they possibly could have constituted a danger to the Fox family, that aside from the monstrous smear they represented to the memory of a deceased loved one. I spoke with the leadership of FF and the matter was dealt with, I have to acknowledge, almost immediately.
This thread should be removed forthwith.
