I don't know who wrote this piece but it's quite good. Rather sums up the coalition of the confused.

I think that article is a bit 'confused' to be honest. It's a scatter gun shot at recent Fine Gael utterances but doesn't seem to know what point it's trying to make.

Soem of the poorer FG ideas like banning hoddies, internment, shoot on sight if someone is on your property etc....

Don't resort to populism, don't try to replace FF by being like them.

It's today's daily rant, and to sum up it says Fine Gael have squandered the momentum built up in Millstreet by proposing 'internment' and hitting out at travellers. It's uncredited so it's not exactly a hard-hitting news article, just their daily bile. It'll move on to something else tomorrow.

Who exactly are they proposing to intern?

I don't think anyone in Fine Gael suggested 'internment' per se. Brian Hayes proposed that protective custody should be made available in certain gangland cases.

I think that the adjective Orwellian is flung around a bit too easily, but I can think of few things more Orwellian than locking someone up without trial and calling it "protective custody" or the absurd term I heard attributed to Hayes, "administrative detention".

Locking people up without trial and not in anticipation of even bringing a charge is the very dictionary definition of internment.

And if the criteria for doing so is that the person is under serious threat from others, the following two questions are raised:
    1. Will they ever be let out if this threat is said to continue?
    2. Who else in the population is said to be under a similar serious threat?

As for the Independent piece, it probably is out to "get" Fine Gael. I wonder is there a name attached to it in the print edition?
Still, individual FG reps are serving up the ammunition. Making proposals to change the law of the state demands a certain level of diligence and forethought. In recent times we haven't been receiving that from FG.

Hayes' argument is that if the Gardai were able to lock people up for 30 days it would be easier to collect evidence to prosecute them, as people would not feel intimidated when it comes to giving evidence.

Of course, its complete bullsh1t. How would a Garda approach this? Maybe:

Well, Madam, if we get enough evidence to put him away, he won't bother you, but if we don't, or the judge lets him off, he'll be around to cut your throat in a couple of weeks. Is that alright?
The only way to change the world is to win elections.
