He deserved to be banished ---he does tend to behave childishly but he has undoubted talent and deserves to be given a chance to see what he can contribute. He must however bear in mind that good politics depends on teamwork.
I've been talking to John and he says that while Coveney is of course his preferred leader, in the national interest he is prepared to return in time to front bench politics under any leader other than Kenny. He would insist on a number of "crunch conditions", however. John was very critical of the decision to field three candidates, including himself, in last years election which saw the party return just one deputy. Since Fine Gael were half a quota 'off the pace' for a second seat in the last general election, he cannot see them taking a second seat in Waterford. With Fianna Fail having over a third of a quota over two seats in the last election, the only likely source for Fine Gael taking the coveted second seat could only be down to to a retirement of sitting Labour TD, Brian O'Shea. It is extremely hard to believe that Paudie Coffey could unseat John Deasy.
That's big of him - are you really a friend of his or do you just want to shaft him?Originally Posted by Apparatchik

Deasy's father was one of the worst of many FG "quota squatters", so to see Junior taking this view is hardly surprising.John was very critical of the decision to field three candidates, including himself, in last years election which saw the party return just one deputy. "Elite - a small superior group; esp one that has a power out of proportion to its size." (Oxford English Dictionary)
The majority cannot therefore be the elite.
thanks for that, he must have felt threatened by this strategy or regarded as punishment.Originally Posted by Apparatchik

In fairness to Deasey, Coffey got a great run in Dungarvan, no sign of faction fight (unlike DL). One other problem for JD, who, outside West Waterford and a few political anoraks know who he is? he's a good example of a man with a great future behind him. After 2002 he was a big fish in a small pool, now he's more like a big lobster sitting at the bottom of the pool while the fresh fish swim by, not that I think Varadker is a Cod.
