Maurice Manning - under recognised and under-appreciated???

I am not posting this in the politics section as he has now left politics and heads the Human Rights Commission.

Just wondering how the knowledgable here consider him and his reputation now that he has "retired".

By repute he was the most widely respected and liked person, cross party, in the Oireachtas during his 21 years there. He was shafted by FG after the disaster of an election in 2002 as they needed to fill the Seanad with the new blood. Understandable I supppose and he is reported to harbour no bitterness.

Just wondering how the commentators here view him??
"......... we must sometimes listen to those who, consumed with zeal, have scant judgment or balance. To such ones the modern world is nothing but betrayal and ruin.........We feel bound to disagree with these prophets of doom who are forever forecasting calamity -- as though the world's end were imminent."

Had him for lectures in Belfield back in the mid 70's and he was spot on, fair and competant
as he was in the Seanad and I expect him to be top class as head of the Human Rights Commission.

My understanding is that he was widely respected across party lines.

He spent a lot of time at Nullamore University Residence , run by Opus Dei, in the 1960s. What is the relationship?

    None what so ever.

A lot of people have spent times in places associated with Opus Dei. I have, and I regard Opus Dei with complete contempt.

Anyone who knows Maurice's views would laugh at the idea that he has sympathies for Opus Dei.

I never considered him "under recognised and under-appreciated". Where did you get the idea he was?

re the question: the answer is 'absolutely yes'. In other countries he would have been a senior minister. In Ireland he never held ministerial office, ending up in the backwater than is Seanad Eireann.
