Is Leo Varadkar using public money, to buy votes?

On the News at One, on what was no more than an advert for Leo Varadkar, RTE reported from an event by Varadkar on Leo Street. We heard about buns and coffee provided for the media, followed by a few Varadkar soundbites. No policy questions, of course.

One of his soundbites was about a new social contract, where those who contribute to the system get something from the system.

The other was about keeping public finances on an even keel, and being prudent with public money.

Fast forward 15 minutes, and RTE plays an interview with Tony McLoughlin, TD Sligo North Leitrim.

McLoughlin appeared to indicate that he was voting for Varadkar because he had promised the money needed to fix the N4, in his area. Coveney would offer him nothing in return for his vote.

The cost? A cool one hundred million of public money.

TD after TD has been coming out to support Varadkar, despite him not having made a single policy statement since the campaign launched.

Have they been promised jobs or money, in return for their support?

"Appeared to indicate" bit vague, did he promise him the money or not? Can the Taoiseach just allocate money like that on his own?

I know it's been a while since we had a serious (Labour doesn't count) leadership contest in this country.

People seem to have forgotten how they work.

Ah, that's alright so. Carry on spending state money then.

I am being generous in my language, to avoid the thread being pulled for a review
