Anyone who 'picks up' an inaccuracy like that and goes with it really is a moron.

We'd sometimes get a glimpse behind the myth of the brilliant finance minister.

I particularly remember when he talked not long after the 2011 election about how the government was managing to get house prices back on an upward trajectory as if that was a policy goal.

Then I realised that it probably was. It was little insights like that that the myth of Noonan's unequalled competence became stained by the realisation that what he saw as the squeezed middle was at really in the upper-middle patrimony bracket and higher.

I can hardly imagine Irish politics without him, he's been at front and centre to such an extent and for such long time, but I certainly won't miss him.

I wish him a long and pleasant retirement.

Kudos as Michael Noonan named European Finance Minister of year - Independent.ie

Did he only get it for one year ?

Surely it should have been every year.

The McCole case was horrific, he was to be despised forever after that.

    Its all there for you

But The Banker also awarded Ireland’s finance minister Michael Noonan as the best in Europe for his efforts in bringing about Ireland’s exit from the International Monetary Fund/EU support programme and re-entering the capital markets.

"Most economists would concur with our decision," Mr Kaplen added.
By comparison, In 2010, the late Brian Lenihan was named worst European Finance Minister by the FT.
