No, their choice wasn't clear. It was extremely marginal. Three more seats for FG/Labour/Green and Kenny would now be Taoiseach. So don't ever kid yourself that Ahern got a ringing endorsement. Because he didn't.

Most certainly not. If anything Cowen fits that bill with 52% support, though it remains unclear if this is approval for his job as Finance Minister or as a potential Taoiseach. The fact that 46-44 people are opposed to Bertie resigning does not exactly fit in with the thesis that Enda is the people's choice for Taoiseach. Ultimately the only poll that matters was last May and the people were clear in their answer that Bertie not Enda was their choice.

So, why should he have conceded the election at that point? To make Ahern's coalition negotiations easier?

I think it is correct to say he got an endorsement for the past 3 Elections and to me that is a ringing endorsement.

You can't group three elections together to make an endorsement "ringing".

A blond day can also be a fun day
FG put a lot of thought into their barnets, as Kenny's election posters showed. Lunching Lucinda plied the Black Arts for the Health & Safety Authority. She'd schmooze for Ireland.
