    FG Senators claim 'massive' expenses

A report in the Sunday Independent today shows that a number of Fine Gael Senators are topping the list of Seanad expenses.

The three FG senators who top the list claimed almost twice the average industrial wage in generous expenses alone last year on top of their salary.

Top claimant was Paddy Burke who received €69,837 in expenses during the year. This compares to the €72,000 he claimed in 2006 when he was the third highest claimant.

He was followed in the top three by his party colleague Maurice Cummins, with €62,553, while Paul Coghlin (FG) claimed above €60,000 during the twelve months.

It's time for Enda Kenny to reign in this lot.

    What were the expenses for?

If it's a compensation for not allowing FG in governmet, then its money well spent.

However we really should havve a national debate on the need for a second chamber. Bigger countries do perfectly well without one.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.
