Its corpse still warm, the Mullingar accord has been buried with indecent haste: the day before the Dail broke up for the Christmas break, the chamber witnessed some pretty vicious exchanges between Fine Gael - specifically Leo Varadkar - and Labour deputies.
The new Fine Gaelers are as different from the old Labourites as they are from the old Fianna Failers. Those differences will become more apparent in 2008. The Greens, the PDs and most of the independents are firmly locked into Fianna Fail. So there is now no prospect that FG can present itself credibly as the leader of an alternative government. Now that Kenny's only chance of power requires that he goes knocking on the kneecappers' door, what real relevance can Fine Gael hope to have?
