Will Taoiseach Enda trouser the 38k pay hike?

The Taoiseach received a 38,000 euro increase while Cabinet ministers each trousered a 25,000 euro top-up from the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector. Raising the issue during Taoiseach's Questions, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said the Taoiseach topped a salary table of world leaders featuring US president George Bush and French president Nicolas Sarkozy. However, Enda Kenny has refused to give a commitment that he would not accept the pay awards or reverse them if he got into power.

"We said we wouldn't have taken it. I don't know what we will do in 18 months."
Surely the people deserve to know what the real Fine Gael stance on this issue is?

No. He said that he wouldn't have taken the pay rise if he was in the Taoiseach's current position. That's fair enough for me.

Can you not read? He said he wouldn't have accepted the pay rise. That was in a FG press statement two weeks ago as well. How often do you need to be told?

From what Kenny's said (see above), I get the strong impression he could be open to persuasion on the point.

I've an idea. Lets have an election , vote for FG and see what the story is. Fair enough?

Pfft! That's a silly idea. You'd have to offer him some sort of incentive, like good policy or a whispa.

Come off it - stop trying to put Kenny in the frame when it is Emperor Bertie who is the villain. Ahern is completely out of control: the shenanigans around getting Bevery Flynn Cooper out of her difficulties alone should freeze the blood of any true democrat. This 38K increase is a f**k off to ordinary Irish people - a two finger gesture accompanied by a sneering 'so what are you going to do about it'.

Ahern thinks he is invincible. He's at his most vulnerable in that state of mind.
