FG fail to defeat govt on Shannon vote

I'm surprised FG didn't push like crazy to win this one. Who whipped this?

The Government has survived a Dail defeat by one vote on its decision not to step in over Aer Lingus's axing of the Shannon-Heathrow route.

Blame for the close result was lain at the feet of up to 19 missing TDs, some of whom were said to have had urgent personal business.

The Opposition-backed motion had called on the Government to support efforts to seek replacement airline services for Shannon. It is believed to have been the closest Dail vote on any issue during Bertie Ahern's ten-year tenure.
When you see the words "Mises" or "Hayek" in someone's post, just ask yourself: do I really want to ban paper money and go back to gold?

You have to pity the kind of people who buy into conspiracy theories. I find the following to be the saddest words on the internet: "Re: connection between Bilderberg puppet lady gaga and viral outbreak in ukraine "

Blame it on the government. FG allowed pairings for government ministers who were away on official business - it was 10 GOVERNMENT TDs not turning up that made the vote so close.

Which suggests that the opposition whips bungled an open goal.

If the party in power fails to keep its TD available, the opposition whips are supposed to make them pay dearly for that.

This thread should be locked, it's moronic.

You have to have pairing for a parliamentary democracy to function. FG only provided pairs for ministers who were out of the country on official business.

I really don't see what the story is here. The govt. wins a vote, whopdeedo. I heard Mary Harney among others gets driven around in a merc to, and on our shilling. I bet its all a conspiracy. I'd say about 15/17 of them meet every few days to decide how the govt is run. Be afraid, be very afraid. I'm going to find a rock to hide under.

Yeah, but the main party in govt failed to keep its TDs in line, and the opposition whips should have nailed them on it.

Pairing only counts for ministers, as has already been pointed out. The opposition whips are Eddie O'Sullivan redux.

Already been discussed on other threads, for example here. It is getting silly to have multiples threads discussing the exact same topic. Use the existing threads.
