Colm Burke appointed FG MEP for Munster

Fine Gael Cork city councillor and former Mayor of Cork, Colm Burke has been appointed Fine Gael MEP for Munster. Colm Burke is filling the seat vacated by Simon Coveney who has returned full time to the Dáil. Speaking after his appointment, Colm Burke said: "I am very much looking forward to representing Ireland South in the European Parliament. Fine Gael is the largest grouping of MEPs in Europe and its members have worked extremely hard over the last three years, and I hope to continue that record".

Colm Burke will serve on the European Parliament?s Foreign Affairs Committee, on the Sub-committee on Human Rights and on the Internal Markets committee, which has a major role to play in Irish issues. This committee is currently examining local planning regulations in Ireland, as well as efforts to tackle mobile phone roaming charges across the EU, and the creation of a single insurance market to drive down costs.

Joe O'Callaghan has replaced him on Cork City Council. Colm Burke has a lot of positive qualites even though he is now in the city he hails from mid Cork but I think FG will struggle to hold their seat in Munster next time out if he is there only candidate despite the size of the FG core vote in the constituency.

Does anyone know anything much about Burke's politics? Is he fairly conservative or would he tend towards the liberal wing of FG?

He would in my opinon be very much on the right wing conservative side of the party. There had been speculation in the past that he was a possible defector to the PDs but nothing ever came of it. I can't see him setting Europe on fire but coming from a legal background he should be effecive on committees etc. One thing he is seriously lacking I believe is the common touch so necessary in parish pump politics. Muster will almost definitly lose a seat next time again - this man will not bring home a seat for FG in a Munster 3 seater.

You mean socially conservative or economically conservative? If he's socially conservative he'll get on very well with Gay Mithcell in the parliament.

By the way, why is this being posted as news today? Wasn't this announced some time ago?

I'm not criticising, just asking so don't bite my head off!
