    Alice Glenn has passed away

She would have been on the opposite side to me on the divorce and "pro-Life" referendum and a constant thorn in the side of Garret FitzGerald, but she certainly stood up for what she believed, which is more than most contemporary politicians can say.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

She was a lady well able to speak her mind. I doubt if she would have much truck with quota or feminine studies in universities. R.I.P

Her husband was a decent guy.

Christy Moore immortalised her in "Delerium tremens": - 'I dreamt I was in a jacuzzi along with Alice Glenn / 'twas then I knew I'd never ever, ever drink again'.

If there is a (Catholic) God she is in clover..

    RIP

She definitely had the courage of her convictions. She lived to the ripe old age of 90, some good innings.

    RIP.

Alice Glenn had one immortal soundbite: "A woman voting for divorce is like a turkey voting for Christmas", which I suspect was not totally original.

She was certain the strongest and most formidable opponent of Garret Fitzgerald's Liberal Agenda, strangely, from within Fine Gael. Once the 1980s passed, and most of its ideas passed into law, she diminished and disappeared from prominence. However, in the 1980s she was a Giant.

I hated many things she stood for; all the same RIP to a redoubtable foe of progress.

    Thanks.

Was going to start a thread...

She coined the phrase "turkeys voting for Christmas" re women voting for divorce...

Had something to say also about how no man would marry some loose girl who was running round with condoms....

She became a museum piece in her own time--no small feat

    A sincere woman, though...

    A Rose amongst Thorns

One of the few politicians we have seen in recent decades with the courage of their convictions

    - & not afraid to voice them

While I did not agree with her I admired her for standing up for what she believed in

    - & her refusal to back down or be silenced by the Party Bosses

    RIP Alice

I think she ran as an indo after she was kicked out of FG but didn't get in. I remember her making some other remark about liberals being like 'stuck pigs' after the 'pro-life' and divorce referendums. She was also very (perhaps accurately) scathing about Garret Fitzgerald's 'leadership' style. Even at the time she seemed anachronistic yet it is worth remembering that she & her ilk delayed any serious reform in this country for at least 10 years, and indeed 25 years or more in relation to abortion which we still haven't faced up to. She was a bit of a character but I can't remember her in anything but negative terms. This country was miserable enough in the 80's without having to listen to the likes of her threatening hell and damnation.
