Mitchell failure post mortem begins and the knives are out early

Indo reporting that Mitchell didn't want to be seen with the leader of the coalition which got 55% in the last election because of concerns he would alienate the 17.5% who voted FF.

Mitchell did not want to be seen with Kenny - Presidential Election, National News - Independent.ie

I'm sure that makes sense to....someone. Obviously Kenny allies are actively briefing against Mitchell, but if true the below really do detail a total shambles.

Mr Mitchell didn't want to be seen with Taoiseach Enda Kenny at the Ploughing Championships for fear of turning off Fianna Fail voters.

He frequently ignored the advice of his campaign staff.

The party began to scale back spending as it became evident he would not win.

The campaign gambled on the run in being a straight choice between Mr Mitchell and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness.

Ministers gave few slots in their diaries to help out.
A quoted TD says it best
"It has been a car crash. There isn't much of a wreckage. It just belongs to the scrapyard"

So Enda was being clever? Good man yourself. Do you believe in Santa as well?

And I agree he knew better. It's a reasonable point though that if Kenny was 100% confident in his position as leader, then he'd have pushed that point himself saying "I'm leader and I want Cox/Bruton and I want you all to vote for him". His reluctance to nail his colours to the mast show that he doesn't have that level of confidence.

If the hierarchy of your party are deliberately leaking polls to undermine your position do you:

    A. Ignore them and plough your own furrow aided and abetted by like-minded grass roots supporters
    B. Bow down to the wishes of the hierarchy and allow them the spring in an outsider by dubious means
    C. Row in behind a compromise candidate who at least reflects the values and traditions of the party

I never liked Gay Mitchell, I said at the start he was totally unlikable and he brought most of this on himself by the way he campaigned. But the leadership have a lot of questions to answer as well, as Mairead McGuiness would have had a very strong chance of being President.

In the end I think this result and that of the Oireachtas referendum couldn't have happened at a better time for the government.

i was at ploughing championship, saw Kenny going down very well with people to exclusion of MITCHELL,now i read today that Mitchell did not want to be seen in Enda's company "lest it turn off FF voters" They would only give him the itch. The planks like Shatter, Fitzgerald, Vlad, Lucy Cretin, Hayes etc al should be ashamed of themselves. Also bullock John Bruton who would not run himself but pushed Mitchell to the front line.

Even more to the point - Brute came on Mitchel's media broadcasts, providing an endorsement.

Now Donkeylaffs Bruton providing an endorsement to your campaign, is as useful to getting the campaign off the ground as being strapped to an anvil made of uranium.

Have you a civil word in your head? If you are going to criticise someone, try and do it without the illiterate personal insults.

Ah funny stuff. Well we are talking about a guy who's campaign had a very strong message about the issue of suicide in Ireland......And then when people ask him to smile more he says if he is asked once more about smiling he is going to jump off O'Connell bridge. You can't make this stuff up.

FG are going to need to do a full review with everything that went wrong here, starting with how he got nominated. Make no mistake this is a very poor and embarrassing result for them. I mean you could argue that they were soundly beaten by FF.

That's about as accurate as FG been beaten by a martial arts expert who specialises in persuading convicted criminals to part with thousands of Euro for political purposes.

You're dead right though, you couldn't make this up, truth is stranger than fiction.

I can't see how he could have met them head on. It isn't a decision that is solely at the leaders discretion, and even if he got his way he could never have been proved right. Those who supported GM could always claim that their man would have done better. Well now they can't. Kenny's net position is strengthened, even if the party as a whole took a hit. Wouldn't overdo the importance of the presidency to FG at this point. They have more important things to be concerned with.
