I would never knock anyone making an attempt to better themselves through education. He has two years on the council and will most likely have input into council decisions. As I said I'd be more interested in the why and what he hopes to contribute because of their largesse. This may have more to do with councillors' expenses than what it was spent on.

The headline is 'Additional Information on DLR County Council councillor's expenses'. David has posted a link to a screenshot of the article.

What was the legal basis for doing so?

Given that the state is more than bankrupt, do we really have €10k to pay out to further educate a barrister who is unlikely to have a role in the council in the long term?[/quote

special needs kids get cut, while barristers and councillors get free education.

Hospital services get reduced while hse executives remain.

Taxes get increased while useless quangoes, useless govt depts and useless local co councils remain.

Austerity seems to be for us and not for them. My guess is that this crisis will correct the imbalance.

Neither would I. But I would not expect the State to be paying for a Master's degree for a practising barrister who has a part-time role as a councillor.

In answer to your question as to Why the paid. The answer is quite simple, its because:

They all have a sense of privilege to which they believe they deserve
They have a sense of entitlement beyond belief
It is not their money and therefore do not feel spending decisions should be questioned.
