    Seat % Visualisation 2002 to 2007

Fine Gael has had an incredible performance in this election, the above images show the percent proportion of seats per constituency based upon the number of seats available for each particular constituency. I’ve created this graphic as I felt today’s Irish Times graphics with first perference votes were misleading to a degree given that it is a PR-STV system we live in and that it really is how the seats end up that is the actual result when transfers are included. To borrow an often used phrase, “A lot done, more to do“. At this point, with the Seanad elections now looming and many of the upcoming Fine Gael candidates successful we can expect to see a good crop of new Fine Gael Senators in the next Dail. Fine Gael may require a two election strategy to return to power but the results of this election will provide a very solid foundation upon which to build.

    Nice graphic.

I was struck by Kildare south - FG seems to have a weak spot there.

Both Kildare's and Meath's are problems alright and they'll all need a bit more footslogging.

This is an updated graphic to reflect Dr James Reilly election in Dublin North.

If Mairead McGuinness had ran in Kildare South could have been a different outcome!

I think the most heartening thing is that FG are back with the kind of national presence that we need. As I make it, we now lack TDs in only four constituencies:

    Dublin Central
    Dublin North West
    Dublin Mid West
    Kildare South

which is a big improvement on previously. And I don't think Mairead would have been a definite winner in Kildare South - Louth was legitimate because she's from Ardee, but she would have had a lot of trouble trying to represent Kildare while living two constituencies away.

I don't know. You have to hand it to FF. Kildare South was one of the best examples of vote management. Both candidates over the line on the first count with 37 votes between them.

Aye, some of the FF vote management in this election was superb. Louth being another example.

FG did some good work on that front too.

Although vote management can make you look very stupid sometimes when you suddenly find you have not enough votes to manage.

Yeah, FF vote management in Sligo was good too, getting the candidate who would probably have struggled for transfers within 1,000 of the quota, and their sitting TD claimed the third seat on transfers. FG may have been better advised to run just two.

I for one on looking forward to the 48 pages of gory details in tomorrow's Irish Times which may prompt me to do some more localised graphics per region, its a bit of a pain surfing all the time to get figures - when they're in front of you its a whole pile easier to make the pretty pictures

On the case of vote management, it seems that overall both Mount Streets have done enough to provide them with the argument - we said it'd work and it did or for the most part. Should be interesting to see how this added weight reflects future decisions from the major parties and their respective HQs.

Yes, we should focus on getting Senators elected to those constituencies who could work them for the next 5 years or so. Not sure if Tormey is interested in another run in DNW. Might have to put on my Dick Cheney hat to find someone to take that place.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.
