FG's MEPs to return for General election.

Word on the street is that Gay Mitchell will be back to contest his old constituency in 2007, and that Máiread McGuinness will be parachuted into the capital, as Meath looks solid.
Will Jim Higgins return to fight for that 3rd seat in Mayo, and is Coveney surplus to requirements because in Deirdre Clune and Jerry Buttimer FG are mob handed in his old constituency?
    Any thoughts from anyone?

I think this particular dual mandate should be abolished. Does Gay Mitchell seriously believe that being a TD or an MEP is a part-time job, and that he can fulfill the responsibilities of both position effectively? If so, would his non-MEP colleagues in the FG Parliamentary Party share that view?

A TD can be elected MEP and can hold on to both jobs until the next GE, then s/he must give up his Dail seat if they want to stay in Europe. If Mitchell returns to the Dail, he will have to give up his MEP seat, like Pat "the Cope" Gallagher did the last time.

Seemingly you are living on a different street than I..

I really hope none of the EU MEPs return, not only will it look bad and come across and political opportunism, but they were elected for a full term and I think they should serve that full term not less than that.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

It'd be stupid not to have two of the biggest names in FG not come back and fight an election where the 'real' power (in a sense) is. One thing though, if they are both elected TD's, do they have to give up being MEP's right then, or do they wait till the next local and euro elections in 2009?

Immediately. Otherwise they could serve a full term as MEP, retaining their Dáil seat all the while. It's bad enough that they don't have to resign from the Dáil on election to the EP.

I'm aware of that. However, if this Dail runs to 2007, Mitchell will have been juggling the two positions for over half his his term as a TD. Don't the people of Dublin South Central (and the people of the Dublin Euro Constituency) deserve a full-time representative for this period? Or is FG's desire to hold onto the seat in the meantime more important than that?

Who takes over for Mitchell if he gets elected to the Dail?

    Is it Colm MacEochaidh

Yes they do, the rules should be changed.
