Bruton is the obvious candidate, but no, he won't resign, the party itself won't call for it and he'll sit pretty and see how things unfold for a year or so before making a move one way or the other. No bloodletting, time to consolodate, lt the new td's bed down and reflect.

Why would he resign, any FF gov could be very unstable in this mix...

As an FG opponent I would have to admit that Bruton has been the most impressive spokesman from either of the FG or Lab parties - he came under a little pressure last night on the FG tax proposals but otherwise was very assured. He may not have Kenny's 'charisma' for want of a better word but would inspire more confidence in the electorate, IMHO.

He'll be welcome in the PDs. We could use him to get the party going above in Mayo.

Usually a gain of 10 seats would be enough to secure any party leader's job.
In his case that would bring them up to 43. But I'd say 46 or 47 would be thumbs up for him.

If FG can go through a general election and not change leaders straight after, they'll jump at the chance to do it at last.
If there is a future, it will be Green.

Doesn't it say in the fine gael constitution that whenever fine gael fails to get into government they must seek re-election. This is in order to avoid the hole knife in the back scenario which tends to create friction in parties and we have a tendancy to be in opposition anyway.
