So he is looking for additional office assistance during the time of the budget. Expects to have an increased volume of correspondence, I suppose. I don't see why he expects someone to do the work for free. And are the kind of people who would work for free, the kind that we want at the heart of the workings of the Governing Party.

Dangers of having to supplement insufficient pay is one of the excuses given for the largesse doled out to politicians.

He posts the vacancy on the 22nd with a closing date on the 24th and he's interviewing on the 25th. Is there any reason for the short time frame for advertisement and between receipt of applications and interview? God he's interviewing the very next day after close of applications....that doesn't leave him much time to contact all those prospective interns.

    Seems a foregone conclusion!

It's not exactly black and white but I'll give you my tuppence worth. If this was his own private business he could appoint anyone he wanted but he's a public servant (allegedly). I don't know if it's currently legislation but in a workplace I was employed previously the management/union contract OBLIGED vacancies to be advertised. It does smack of cronyism to give the job to your wife. Unemployed people should be given a fair crack of the whip to know about vacancies such as this. All through my working life I looked for only one consideration. To be granted an interview for the job I applied for. Then it was entirely up to me to convince the panel I was the right guy for the job. It, to use that old chestnut, beggars belief that in this and other cases like it 20 people were interviewed and the wife just happened to be the most impeccably qualified prson. It might come under the ancient defence of "I have done nothing wrong" but that doesn't necessarily make it RIGHT.

The original argument was if his wife had been "the best person for the job". Why did he only appoint her after she failed to co-opt his seat? His election lit said he wanted to change society from one where who you know count... His wife had criticised the Healy-Raes for co-opting seats in the family, sneered at public sector "entitlement" and had naively believed croyism was limited to Fianna Fáil.

On this occasion it's a pity he could not offer remuneration for two weeks licking envelopes for his constituents Christmas list. It shows a regrettable but all too predictable lack of unemployment awareness.

This TD is Dublin based and gets a taxfree allowance of €1000 pm paid with salary to turn up (officially its for travel and subsistence).

we ordinary workers pay for our travel to work.

he could not possibly spend €1000 pm getting to the Dail - so why doesn't he use the money to pay the intern. the ad doesn't even mention getting travel expenses paid or a lunch allowance!

    +1

    But FG continues FF's cronyism:

Shatter gives another of his election donors a key state job - National News - Independent.ie

"JUSTICE Minister Alan Shatter has appointed another personal donor to a state position.

Accountant Declan O'Neill made a €1,000 donation to Mr Shatter's war chest for the 2007 General Election.

He was appointed Taxing Master yesterday -- a job which comes with a €145,000 salary.

The appointment of Mr O'Neill means two of Mr Shatter's five listed donors in 2007, when he received €5,500, have now been appointed to state jobs.

Mr O'Neill, who specialises in legal costs, also carried out work for Mr Shatter's legal firm, Gallagher-Shatter."
