    Paul Connaughton announces his retirement

The FG TD for Galway East has announced that he will not be standing in the coming General Election. He has been a member of the Oireachtas since 1981. I assume this opens the door for Ciaran Cannon, however it will put a serious dent in FG's hopes for 3 seats here.

What is the likelihood of a few Fine Gael TDs who are retiring at the next election going missing around the time of key budgetary votes?

Another beacon of light bites the dust.

Who the FCK is Paul Connaughton?

A TD since 1981. 30 years and nobody noticed him.

He will be a sad loss, for sure. Just name the seat after him, the people of Galway East would be better represented by a chair anyway.

What a sad indictment of the constituency and our political system. I live in Galway East.
