    Tribune trash

It was with a heavy heart I read 'the tribune' (Connaught Tribune) overage of Paul Connaughton's resignation. The blatant launch of 'young Paul' was a sad reflection of our political system. Nothing personal or a reflection on 'young Paul'. The journalist and editor should realise that this type of 'journalism' is typical of the gombeen parish pump Healy Rae system we have created for ourselves. We are an insult to the word democracy! The coverage was an insult to many around the World that fight for press freedom.

It wasn't charity work, he was using his position as an elected representative to try and improve the lot of Irish emigrants abroad. Obviously way beyond a tool like you.

While TDs' salaries have increased massively in the last number of years, he would easily have cleared over €2m in pay, expenses and allowances over his time in politics. Did the People of Ireland get their money's worth?
Over 30 years, €2million isn't a spectacular amount - try it with your own salary. Particularly when the allowances would include a secretarial allowance, which he wouldn't get a penny of.

Well why don't you look at his voting record? Over 30 years, he'd have voted for, or against, lots of things that affect the whole country.

Several questions have been raised in this thread and the answer to some are as follows:

Paul Connaughton worked for a short time as Manager of the Tuam Mart before serving a little while in the Senate.
He strolled into a safe Dail seat.
He voted with his party, then in government, to close Tuam sugar factory.
The closure of that factory didn't make much difference to farmers locally because very little beet was grown in the area.
The closure badly hurt the economy of Tuam as many of the employees were townies.
Since then Paul has specialised in representating the interests of the rural dwellers of the constituency, but almost always at local level (clientelism) as opposed to in the Dail.
He's now doing his utmost to secure the nomination for the Son.
Paul won't be missed, except perhaps by Meriweather who happens to be one of Paul's canvassers.

Now if we could only get rid of the other three........

I heard of the guy but like most backbench TD's I haven't a clue what he achieved other than getting reelected. Reminds me a bit of when Alan Dukes lost his seat, what a loss to the nation, etc - only problem was the voters did not agree. We may not get the representatives we deserve but we get what the majority of voters want.

    Young Ulick?

I am really hoping that Ulick does not have a son or daughter waiting in the wings? I might have to stop buying 'the tribune'

Well you have been proven to be a fool have you not. I was reading on the Wall Street Journal that the Connaughton Kid has lopped a few million off African Aid and now the sugar factory is going full steam, the hospital in Ballinasloe is opening the extension and best of all Obama is going to be cutting the ribbon on a high tech factory in Caltra.

The people of East Galway knew what they were doing and look forward to another 29 years of sucking off the public tit.

FG, the gift that keeps on giving
