Enda kenny urges supporters to transfer to Greens

Just heard the announcement on Today FM. It was made in Dublin. Enda Kenny asked supporters to vote FG-LABOUR and then GREEN. Matt Cooper had Trevor Sargent on to see if the Greems would reciprocate. You can listen online at www.todayfm.ie.

    That's nice.

People seem to dislike Fidelma Healy-Eames [FG- Galway West] but she has been quite active on student issues so I'll give her my No. 4 [O'Brolchain, Higgins, Connolly, Healy-Eames....]

And well he might. Fine Gael have no chance of getting into government without the Green Party, so us doing well is to his and Fine Gael's benefit.
I'm sure many Green Party members will give healthy transfers to FG and Lab candidates, as we wish to see a change of government.

However, Trevor (and the entire party, as it is us who made the decision) are correct not to official advise transfers.

While FG/Lab look to be making progress they will most probably need the Greens on board to form a Government.

Though the Greens are going into this as a stand alone Party they know as well as the rest of us that a FF/Green coalition is an unlikely combination.

Dangerous too for them as the lesson of Labour in 1992 still resonates a warning to those who might be tempted.

    Greens

This is a bad move for FG which could cost them seats such as Charles Flanagans in Laois Offaly and it will have put the final nail in Twomeys seat in Wexford. People do not realise the fear, anger and hatred(a strong but apt word) for the Green party in Ireland out side the cities. If FF/PD choose to run an attack ad on the rainbow they could just point to some of the Green policies such as the ban on live exports. Enda should have let things be and play it by constituency. People who would be amenable to the Greens in FG would have known to transfer to them anyway. This pronouncement was unnecessary.

Wouldn't we have to have such a policy before FF could point it out?

It ll cost them seats? They re on 10% more or less, so someone must like what the GP are doing. I will be giving my number 2 or 3 to the GP as thngs stand. They are punching way above their weight as is, and are currently more important in this campaign by far than the PDs. Strange but true

I agree. They were hardly going to start voting for FF or the PDs before now.

Last seats in multi seat constituencies often come down to a hand full of votes. I think the greens are going to get transfers from all over the shop as they are the party that has trapped into the Zeitgeist.

However in rural areas this may help the greens as a lot of FGers may mistakingly think there is a conflict between sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

Kenny's endorsement will carry weight in these areas and may tip the balance for voters desparate to get rid of FF so that agriculture may have some future!
