Fine Gael Announce Details of National Campaign to Promote Party’s Jobs Plan
Public Meetings, Online Advertising, New Website, NewERA Video and Interactive Online Game Included in New Campaign
The Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny T.D., today announced the details of a new national campaign to promote the Party’s Jobs Plan which contains both short term and medium term measures to get our country back to work. The Fine Gael Jobs Plan is built around short term measures to take up to 40,000 people off the Live Register in one year and our NewERA investment programme to build a range of new infrastructure networks while also creating 105,000 jobs over four years.
The Fine Gael Leader was joined at the launch of the campaign by Front Bench colleagues Simon Coveney T.D., the principal author of the NewERA plan and Leo Varadkar T.D. who has developed the Party’s shorter term jobs protection and creation proposals.
Commenting on the campaign, the Fine Gael Leader said;
“The single biggest problem in Ireland today is that we have 434,000 on the Live Register. Thousands more are being forced to emigrate in search of jobs. Many in Government don’t appear to recognise this simple reality. We in Fine Gael do. That is why our approach to the economy is driven by one central principle – get our people off the dole and back to work.
“The Fine Gael jobs plan is two fold.
“Leo is proposing actions we can take immediately. Simon is looking at longer term proposals. Leo’s plan will take 40,000 people off the dole in a year. It will give the unemployed new opportunities through a combination of a graduate internship programme and second chance education while changes to the social welfare code and a jobs subsidy scheme will help make it easier to protect and create jobs.
“Over a four year period Simon’s NewERA plan will create over 105,000 jobs. This will happen through an injection of €18 billion euro of new money into the Irish economy. This money will be raised from private equity, sale of state assets and investment from the European Investment Bank. These jobs will be in renewable energy, water quality and broadband. They will be delivered within Fine Gael’s first term in government.
“The campaign being announced today is designed to reach out to the public and tell them that there is a different approach on offer. There is a Party that recognises the need for a real focus on job creation and job protection. That Party is Fine Gael.”
Commenting on the campaign, Simon Coveney said;
“Ireland should aspire to have an economy that is smart, green and connected. That is the challenge for the 21st century. Unfortunately we are still relying on some infrastructure networks that date back to the 19th century. NewERA is Fine Gael’s plan to invest €18 billion over four years in transforming our broadband network, our green energy generation and storage capacity and our antiquated water distribution and treatment facilities.
“By investing now in these networks Ireland can dramatically reduce or dependence on imported fossil fuels within ten years. We can deliver broadband to every home in the country and we can transform our water system so that it is fit for purpose for a modern progressive economy. In building this platform for the economy of the future we also get the benefit of putting over 100,000 people back to work across a range of sectors and industries.
“If we are to truly build a smart economy for tomorrow we need to start building the foundations today. Fine Gael’s NewERA plan provides the blue print to make that smart economy a reality.”
Fine Gael’s Enterprise Spokesman Leo Varadkar said;
“Ireland does not need to lose another generation of young people to forced emigration. But that is what is happening right now as tens of thousands have been forced to emigrate over the last two years. Our best and brightest are leaving these shores and bringing their talents and skills to bear in other countries. This is both a personal tragedy and an economic cul de sac.
“We need to do everything we can now to save as many jobs as we can and to keep our young educated people in this country. The Government have thrown their hat at this issue and have simply given up. The plans I have set out can immediately start taking people off the Live Register. We estimate up to 40,000 people in the first year alone.
“Ideas such as expanded graduate internship programmes, second chance education and jobs oriented and biased changes to the social welfare code can help keep our young at work or in education. If we act now we can staunch the increasing flow of our young and educated people being forced from their home shores.”
