    Merkel's support for Fine Gael

    Source:The Examiner

The reasons for transferring to Fianna Fail keep on adding up.........

In any case, I think the article makes an excellent point towards the end

"Such an intervention by Ms Merkel in France’s closely fought May presidential elections would undoubtedly provoke a major international row."

is the text of the letter available?

This is something that can easily backfire, FG spouting support from the German government.

I think the most damaging aspect of this letter is not the support that it gives to FG, but the fact that she clearly doesn't want to work with FF anymore.

People are going to ask, Why? Is the most cunning and devious or them all not very well respected in the E.U.?
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

Right, and the Germans know what's good for us, eh?

No surprise here – haven’t the Germans and the Blueshirts a long history of collaboration?

I presumed this was a belated April Fool but then having thought about it, it makes sense................

The Cork Examiner/Examiner/Irish Examiner - bastion of all things Fine Gael since the founding of the party or rather hater of all things Fianna Fáil.

It's like picking up the Daily Telegraph in England to read a story about ms. Merkel asking people to vote Tory at the next election. Quelle Surprise !!

But the thing that brings a smile to my face the most is - this is the party who on its relaunch to its current title said - " We won't tell you how to vote "
Those who think they know it all upset those of us that do.........

She's a leading member of FG's European party - the European People's Party. Why wouldn't she support her colleagues in every country? It's unusual for a sitting Prime Minister to get publicly involved in an election issue like that, but not unusual for lower-down people to. Of course, FF wouldn't know that, being Euro-isolationists by comparison in the Parliament.
Labour will, presumably, have the support of Zapatero, Socrates, Blair/Brown (though whether or not that would be useful...!), Schroeder, Stanishev, Prodi, Royale, etc. The Former Danish Prime Minister, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen has been to several Labour Party events in the past few years.

Who in the world convinced them that this was a good idea? very fine and well for relations at the European Parliament, and for furthering FG/CD relations there - but not quoting foreign leaders, particulary from countries with a history of rather violent interference on the rest of the continent (however much they've behaved themselves in the past 50 years) would seem to be a fairly basic political principle - doesn't seem a very savvy move, strategy-wise

Better than being Blair's loyal pawn in all things european!
As a small country we cant keep on running to the same big power, or they'll end up owning us. We need a better balance. With the Berlin-Boston speech, the government is quite unambiguously allied to the Anglo-sphere with its free-market and brutal imperialist outlook.
Unlike Bertie, who is enamoured by all things british(dev must be rolling in his grave), Fine Gael have been working on tactical alliances with the powers on the continent. If we are to be truely free, then we shouldnt be beholden to one or the other but work between them for our best long-term interest of the country. A stronger alliance with Germany would balance our natural ties to Britain and America.

Nothing at all unusual about this given Fine Gael and the CDU's long and close association within the European Christian Democrats.

Expect to see more of it on all sides in the election.
