I like this. It means they want change. Improve the working of the dail, make it relevant again.
Enhancing the Committees which do work well, reducing them down will cut out the deadwood like Braughan and Kennedy in the recent Transport Committee with MOL telling him he was behaving like a spoiled child because he actually knows how to run his business!
The Seanad is a soapbox for wafflers and is a waste of money. Having a leader like Donie Cassidy just proves it. Get them into the Dail if they want to legislate.

Lists systems do need to be looked at. The current status quo doesn't bloody work.

What about the children's rights amendment?

Presumably the current government will get around to that when they can insert an "internet café" clause.

The FG proposals are about good governance. That doesn't mean they won't hold referenda on other issues. FG, as far as I'm aware, are supportive of a children's rights amendment.

Still don't like this. You're removing an oversight body for no defined benefit other than reducing the bill a little bit.

    List system for 15 TDs
Uch. In theory I'm not against this. I like the US system where the President picks the people they believe are best to be in key departments. I look at Mandelson in the UK who (regardless of his personal character) is genuinely doing a very good job in his role. And then I remember that had we had this system in Ireland 7 years ago, we'd probably have Maurice Ahern TD right now. There is no historical way of looking at Irish history and not thinking this would turn into cronyism.
These two are connected and represent an inadequate trade-off. I would prefer a second house with a truly national outlook and the powers to combat the parish pump mentality of the Dail. But it is so far from that that currently abolition makes sense if there are commensurate changes in the Dail. 15 TDs on a list system is not a sufficient change from the status quo, the small number decreasing the supposed effectiveness of the move while as you say increasing the probability of cronyism. At least one third of the Dail* should be made up of TDs elected on the list system to make the impact needed on this country.

The party who declared the republic are now planning on declaring a new republic because the one they declared was failure. This new republic doesnt address the national issue and highlighting this is trolling.I think you should follow your own advice and stop the trolling.

I am very pleased with these proposals. For a long time I have felt that FF have perverted so many facets of our country in so many ways that we need to move towards a French style "2nd Republic".

Overall I would be supportive of these measures. The one aspect I feel I would change is the list system. I would prefer more then 15 TDs to eminate from the National list. Ideally, I think it should be more in the 25-40 range out of a reduced 140 seat Dail.

I think its important that FG push these measures through because even though the Irish people actually need something like this, there is a natural malaize in the Irish psychy which is fearful of change. For example, the Seanad was a source of endless *************************ing and moaning until its Abolition was proposed, and then people came out of the woodwork praising it!

I don't know what FGs plans are now....assuming there is a National Pension Reserve left in a couple of years! However, they did formerly propose using a small percentage each year solely for use on critical infrastructre projects such as roads, railways, telecommunications and energy. I am inclined to agree on this as, improving capital resources is one of the few actions which can improve conditions for future generations.
