sounds like a good healthy debate, but not sure that's necessarily good for Enda Kenny. Fair play to Lucinda Creighton though. However I'd suspect that the things she identified as being more effective than quota's are far too radical for FG, because of the way it would require a fundamental change in the way political parties and politics in general operates.

There is no way that TD's will give up the parachute of the Senate, his only hope of getting that proposal accepted is to bring it directly to the membership, there are quite a few turkeys needing a cull.

    Useless so she is.
Not even the lowest life form in FF would have gone to the Mirror, in the way she did.

Female quotas is a bad idea.
Why not a quota for non-white, disabled, homosexual, etc?

And what if the quota means that a less qualified woman is forced over a more qualified male?

I dont disagree that we need more women participating (and other groupos that aren't male, white. christian heterosexuals) but I don't think quotas is the way to go.

A lot of this comes back to Kenny's idea to abolish the Seanad, which in my opinion, is a retrograde step.

The Taioiseach ahs the power to appoint 11 senators.
This is a powerful tool to appoint people of economic competence and thopse in minorities, which is now not possible.

The same objective could be achieved with a list system. I don't think we can afford a Senate just to appoint 11 competent people when dozens more incompetents are appointed to make up the numbers.

A Seanad based on an open list system would make sense.

Perhaps. I just don't see the need for a second house at all. We are over-governed in this country at local and national level and serious reform is required. Kenny's plan is a good start but only a start.

Losing out to a pedestrian newbie like Creighton doesn't say much for Kenny's control of his PP. The writing may be on the wall for his leadership.
