Don't expect too much "new blood" to enter politics after this, particularly Party politics. The whole setup appear to be an apprentice-journeyman-master system where nothing changes. No wonder our country is in such a mess.

Fine Gael asked Lee to run, why? It appears now that Lee's economics knowledge wasn't the reason but just an exercise to make sure FF or Labour didn't get the seat, nothing more.
Anyone remember the reason Lee gave for running? No mention of pothole fixing, lots of mention of economic input.

Ah, Irish Party politics, where you need an iron shirt what with all the knives involved. Unless you're a nice, compliant little boy who sits quiet while time passes.

It would make me cynical about politics here except that I'm already cynical about Irish politics.

As it turns out, George had nothing to offer other than waffle. Like most of our other well known economists, he has an ego the size of a bus and a track record of achievement that could be written on the back of a stamp.

George Lee proved why he didn't succeed yesterday. He is used to getting his own way, being able to say what he likes, being to dominate everything, being right all the time and not tolerant of lesser mortals. Fine Gael are probably really glad to be rid of him and I don't think RTE are going to welcome with open arms either.

He behaved like a spoilt child who when not allowed to play with the FG toy box stomped off in hissy fit. Reminds me of Violet Elizabeth from Just William -"I'll scream and scream until I'm sick". He's the one who's a megalomaniac. Who could actually work with George Lee without having ideas of premeditated murder ?

Just looking at that clip I think Violet Elisabeth was very badly treated.

I have to say that FG finally got their act together in defending themselves although I reckon it was too late. James Reilly and Mairead McGuinness did really well as people coming from similar backgrounds to George to show that you have to fight for what you get. Particularly Reilly who on VB said that he lobbied hard to be Health spokesperson whereas George Lee did seem to expect it to be handed to him.

Why did FG leave it so late to defend their position? They were totally anonymous throughout the day yesterday as if they were in their foxholes letting the flak fall all round them until Leo Varadkar came on the frontline. Incidentally FG should have put James Reilly on the Frontline with the big audience because his route into politics was more similar to Lee's than Varadkar and he really performed well on VB. If Reilly was on the Frontline I think it would have better for them.

I am impressed with the way FG have turned it around and made Lee's stamina and stomach for a fight outside of the cocoon of RTE the issue using the appropriate people like James Reilly and Mairead McGuninness. But it may well have been too late with the way FG just disappeared it seems throughout the day until late in the evening to defend themselves.

    That was a big mistake.

They should have gone on the attack immediately.
