Presume this has been noted above somewhere, but it says something about George's self obsession, his dismay that noone was listening to him, that he made his announcement while the funeral of Tomás MacGiolla was taking place. You'd think common courtesy would have at least intervened...

Well yeah GoldDream, but if you decide you don't care about 26,000 living voters, why bother thinking about 1 dead one? Interesting point from Malbekh, for the next 6 months or so he'll be a punchline, after that he'll be a cautionary tale.

The term "serving your time" is a clumsy one, because it implies sitting there doing not very much, until your turn comes. On the other hand a "probationary period" does mean something. George Lee had a soap box presented to him as part of his job spec. in RTE. There is no way that FG could have given him that and it was unrealistic of him to expect it.

The jobs of journalistic and politician are different, even if they are two sides to the same coin.

I think Enda has some responsibility for the mess, specifically due to not seeing that he was "mentored" in some way after getting elected, rather than being abused or misused the way he way.

But Lee's petulant behaviour only goes to prove that he was a misfit, and it never would have worked out.

Perhaps if we had a 'probationary' economic crisis , that argument would make sense .

You are right, so far Enda has handled it well, kept a dignified silence and allowed Geroge to do that which he always wanted, hog the limelight, and boy has that light shown up a few warts I didn't see, and how disappointed I am. I mean Browne literally stripped him bare tonight for all to see, no radicalness, no originality, just platitudes, cringing pseudo heroism, cliches and froth. So he was used as an asset in a way he did not think he as an asset should be used, what absolute trite sh-te! Of course FG would use him, after all Dublin was where they had to make great inroads, and Kenny can still do it, by at least apologising to the people of Dublin South for one of his party letting them down, and by telling them that with him it is not froth, not impatience, not the nearest way, but the long hard and certain haul up the mountain, where there will eventually be a wonderful view, one much more appreciated, productive and beautiful because of that very effort itself.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Enda Kenny for an hour two years ago in relation to bio ethics issues, I really really like the guy, not one to throw the dirt, a real gentleman with convictions in relation to some issues that are more important even than this recession; a man who overcame an innate lethargy that is the territory of a political dynasty, and dragged himself out of that to rebuild a decimated party. He is a good and decent man who whatever his shortcomings, (who hasn't!) should not be shafted now. Kenny did not flinch when others gave up. He took the poisoned chalice others declined. Sometimes, I am ashamed to say I too get swayed by the froth, that he is not up to it on those areas that really are only superfluous and without substance, that tell us nothing about the mettle of the man, ironically this does, and he is coming out of it well, thus far.

Indeed now may well be his moment, to turn adversity and disappointment to his advantage, to show his steel and to tell the egoes in the party, be they the D4 Blonde or the maverick Deasy, that the time of the superstars or celebriity is over, that it is the long hard graft, the graft he put in himself when no one else would and that this is not the time to measure the mettle or substance of someone on how they perform on a lite weight chat show, but on fortitude, perseverence, and a sense of public service.
It is not about charisma, it is not about formidable articulation or communication skills, it is not even about taleny or vision or executive ability, the things we were told Haughey, Ahern, and Cowan had. I think rather it is time now for a life and personality more ordinary to lead us, one who can put a team of talents together, a team probably with a bigger ego than his own, because from where I am standing only Kenny can lead such a team and that team is as well rid of George Lee as it is of John Deasy, and maybe Lucinda Creighton too.

Less petulance and more cohesiveness now FG, your leader needs you and so does your country. The measure of the man and the party at this time is how both react to this, Kenny so far looks dignified and Taoiseach material, will the front bench and T.Ds also pass mustard? Will they repeat the mistakes of the past, pissing on Dukes, and then Bruton, only to show us that really there is no depth there at all, just panic among headless chickens?
Absolutely spot on. If the FG front bench panic and buckle now then its over, not just for Enda Kenny but for any hope of FG getting into Govt anytime soon. George has spent the last number of hours winging to anyone who would listen because he hadn't got the guts to see through what the electorate expected of him. Bruton is continually put forward as the party's messiah, and while there is no doubt hes an excellent finance spokesperson has he really got the leadership skills or courage Kenny has displayed over the last number of years while quietly building a formidable team.

George Lee will be paid a compensation package of more than €15,000 following his resignation as a TD after nine months in the job.

I wish I could quit my new job and get a compensation package before I return to my old job. Instead, I'd have to wait 6 weeks before becoming eligble for the dole.

    Yes, that really sucks!

Lee might just retain a tiny shred of credibility if he declined the payment (which he certainly doesn't need) and set an example for all of the others in public life whose snouts are buried deep in the trough. He might also regain some credibility as an economist, given that the €15k+ in question is as disgraceful an example of waste of public funds as any he has himself been going on about in the past.
