    Radical NewERA plan launched

    €18bn Invested by NewERA over 4 Years will Make Ireland Competitive Again While Creating Over 100,000 Jobs

    The Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny T.D., today unveiled a detailed plan to transform the Irish economy through €18bn worth of investment in broadband, green energy and water networks over a four year period that would reposition the Irish economy for the 21st century while creating 105,000 new jobs in that period. The Report’s author, Simon Coveney T.D. said that the plan represented the single greatest transformation of our economy and our commercial semi state sector in over 50 years.

    Commenting on the plan, the Fine Gael Leader said;

    “Fine Gael has a radical plan to transform our economy, make it competitive again and to get our people back to work. This plan is part of a wider set of proposals that we as a Party are going to put to the electorate at the next election. We want to transform our political system by reducing the number of Oireachtas members by 1/3rd and we want to introduce the hugely successful Dutch universal health care system to replace our failed FF/PD health system. Key to our radical change proposals for the country is our plan to transform our economy through NewERA.

    “This plan will invest €18 billion over four years in making our broadband network among the top five in the world, in turning us in to a net energy exporter by 2030 with 50% of our energy coming from renewable sources by 2020 and in overhauling our water networks and infrastructure so that we have a system that is fit for the 21st century, not the 19th.

    Commenting on the plan, Simon Coveney said;

    “NewERA represents the single largest transformation of our semi state sector in over 50 years. We intend swapping old state companies for new ones that can position our economy for the competitiveness challenges of the 21st century. There is no longer a need for the state to own and run Bord Gais, ESB International and ESB Power Gen & Supply. Fine Gael will divest the state of these assets when the market and other conditions are appropriate and use the funds raised to re-invest in new 21st Century infrastructure.

    “We will finance this investment programme for NewERA through new commercial borrowing by semi states, funding from the EIB, an injection of funds by the NPRF and a NewERA recovery bond that will be offered to all the Irish people.

    “This plan is transformational in its nature. Fine Gael is unapologetic about that. If we want to have the type of modern, dynamic and competitive economy that can create and sustain jobs NewERA is exactly the type of plan that the country needs. In Government Fine Gael will deliver this plan.”

    My God - policies -I wonder will anybody bother to comment on the contents as opposed to smart arse quips about the messenger.

    One can only live in hope.

    PS - to the boys and girls in HQ - why am I , Joe nobody in the grassroots , the first to put this up on P.ie - get the goddamn finger out - maybe lucinda has a point about our communications department!

    Yes, good to see.

    The focus on jobs is a welcome change to the total ignorance of this single biggest issue affecting Ireland from the current government.

    No doubt, it will be attacked by all and sundry. But, it projects a positive feeling that is badly needed.

    If Cowen, Gormless and Co. are serious about putting the country first they will go to the Park immediately, tender their resignations and let the electorate vote in an untainted alternative.

    Sounds good on paper, putting it into effect is the obvious problem.

    One question: Why do FG want to sell ESB International? Is it not better to keep a profitable branch of ESB in public ownership?

    It may raise funds in the short-term, but it's going to lose the taxpayers of Ireland (its ultimate owners) money in the long-term.

    its an excellent start. More like it please.

    It will be interesting to see what FG do with the Budget. I hope it blows FF out of the water.

    Looks good, and very positive attitude. Good contrast to what coming out from everyone else. Wonder what the greens will make of FG's green agenda.

    Very impressive piece of work. Very ambitions and as Coveney and Kenny say it would lead to a massive transformation of the Irish economy and that is exactly when we need.

    I imagine people will find faults with it and I of course it isn't perfect, but still very impressive and full credit to Simon Coveney. As people have said many times on this site, he is very intelligent and that document does show that.

    All spoiled by the fact that Enda has called for the resignation of the Catholic hierarchy who enabled the molestation of children for decades. He said this is what the public wants. Actually, those of us that have been through it don't want resignations, we want jail sentences. But as usual we set the standards so low for those in power that resignations might seem like appropriate justice. It isn't - and Enda doesn't speak for me.

    Why does he want to sell the state companies that can used to achieve his goals? Seems backward to me.

    Stay on topic.

    Either start a new thread on that or add it to one of the Murphy report threads that are already running.

    We should keep this thread focused on the New ERA policy.

    A mission statement from Fine Gael has no relevance to an announcement by the leader of FG on the most important topic of the week/month/year? It becomes easier and easier to see why sexual abuse was brushed under the carpet for decades.
