Listeners trash FG's proposal to get firearms off the street

Listeners of a lunchtime radio show yesterday thought they were being treated to a comedy sketch when they heard a politician suggest putting bins in churches and youth clubs for criminals to dump their firearms.

But the policy initiative was genuine and part of Fine Gael's plan to take guns off the streets.

It was proposed by the party's justice spokesman, Jim O'Keeffe, who said guns could be placed anonymously in secure bins in "secure" public places such as youth clubs and churches.

Mr O'Keeffe was critical of the Government gun amnesty, which resulted in more than 1,000 weapons, including over 800 firearms, being handed in. The two-month amnesty did not offer immunity to owners of weapons if they were found to have been involved in crime.

He told NewsTalk's presenter Eamon Keane that he wanted a "proper" gun amnesty which was successful in other countries.

But Mr Keane said he did not think the guns proposal would work on the ground. He was backed up by listeners who flooded the station with calls and texts.

Last night, Tanaiste Michael McDowell accused Fine Gael of reaching new lows of credibility. He said placing guns anonymously in bins in churches and youth clubs could have allowed murderers to dispose of their murder weapons and escape conviction.

the DPP and the law reform commission have come out in full support of other areas of fine gael's justice policy. why didnt you start threads to point that out??

their opinions are obviously less important than a small and unrepresentative group of newstalk 106 listeners

are you related to future moron??? you both seem to like clutching to ever more pathetic straws

In fairness, perhaps real intention was to save the taxpayer the cost of kitting out Gay Mitchell's new 'Grand Army of the Republic' due to be created in the new Blueshirt Bootcamps... a great example of joined up thinking benefiting the exchequer!

and why didnt you tell us of the massive support from listeners on matt cooper yesterday for billy timmins' ideas on young offenders???

surely cooper has way more listeners than eamon keane, and therefore the listeners views musty be far more representative

so i take it you accept that there is OVERWHELMING public support for timmins' proposals??

FG were on local Limerick radio talking about "Boot Camps" they really seemed ridiculos. Don't know what people think but they seem to be making up policy as they go. It reminds me of 2002 when they were talking about refunding Eircom share holders and taxi drivers and anyone else. Not sure but I definately get the feeling that they are coming apart. Kenny is just not cutting mustard.

Rover, I can’t believe you’re trying to seriously defend these policies, they smack of absolute desperation on the part of the Fine Gael Leadership…. There’s isn’t a snowballs chance in hell Labour or the Greens would support them…

your opening post suggests that policies should be judged by the comments from a small group of listeners to eamon keane.

so surely you must agree with me that in applying your formula to billy timmins proposals, they must be absolutely great, because they received huge support on the matt cooper show.

    agreed??

if not then you are rubbishing your own first post. or showing yourself up as a braindead moron. someithing tells me you will plump for the latter

    Braindead moron :!:
Rover how old are you? seriously I would expect that kind of childish name calling from a twelve year old, which I presume you are not. Is this what FG expect to pass as civilised discourse throughout the election campain
