Martin Cullen - "This defeat gives us even more confidence"

I felt like holding my head in my hands when I heard him say this on the news this morning.

Confidence to do what, wreck the country even more?

I suppose the e-voting catastrophe gave the government confidence to waste more money on something else.

Critical self analysis and soul searching FF most certainly do not do. They have been given a strong message by 75% of the electorate who rejected them and the direction they are heading, and yet they take this as a signal from the people to head in the same disastrous direction. In other words, they basically stuck their fingers in their ears, made lots of noise and said "I can't hear you!"

When will they cop that when it comes to the running of the economy, this government is like a learner driver going the wrong way up a one way street?

This "confidence" that Cullen speaks of should make us all more determined to get these clowns out.

Confidence in the face of rejection, unpopularity and past mistakes is surely the mark of meglomania.

Cowen, Cullen and co seem to be demonstrating meglomania, in other words they have lost the plot.

A bit like Hitler ordering around phantom armies as the Russians were a few hundred yards away and confident victory is still possible.

Ideally, they should call a general election. Nothing to do with hitting FF hard or anything like it - I just think we need a government that isn't constantly plagued with talk of its imminent collapse. If there was a general election now (during the Greens' "period of reflection", when we have to deal with political instability/stagnation anyway), the winners (whoever they might be) would have a mandate to make the important decisions of government straightaway and for the next 5 years. With that much time ahead of them, they could make tough decisions (that Fianna Fail repeat are necessary for the State) without looking over their shoulders at the clock.

If they choose not to call a general election (as is their right based on their mandate from 2007), I hope they finally dump their vague attempts to court popularity. There must be no roll-backs on Budget cuts a la the medical cards. Administer harsh medicine please, government, and get the country back on its feet. If they do that, they'll get my vote next time out. If this is what Cullen is referring to, then I'm slightly hopeful. That said, I can't honestly see FF being the bad cops.

Presumably it will all end with Fianna Fail having no seats and Martin Cullen standing naked on the hill of Tara screaming "I AM A GOD!".
