Like many of us, Shane Coleman was perplexed at what the hell Bertie was doing launching his 72 year old brother into a by election at face value he has little chance of winning.
Shane however today devoted the main editorial in the Tribune to his likely motive and it should scare the pants off the whole country.
Quite simply Bertie Ahern still privately believes he can become Taoiseach again and intends to use an improbable victory for Maurice as a massive reminder to FF that he is their only chance to now pull themselves from the inferno.
Shane Coleman thinks Ahern believes such an improbable Maurice win against a backdrop of national incineration will propel him back to the top spot after a summer heave against Cowen. FF'ers will panic and believe Ahern is an electoral miracle man who can rescue them.
What's more, Coleman suggests Ahern believes this bollocks himself.
Please don't reply to this with "Ahern is finished, no chance"
FF are and always have been capable of the most grotesque u turns and anyone who thinks that on their deathbed, some of them might not ask for a dose of Ahern morphine is being very naive.
I'd love to see him get back and be on the deck when the whole FF ship and its rotten cargo goes to the bottom but he is despised even in most sections of DC and Maurice will be walloped on June 5th.
Still a fascinating reminder of how utterly arrogant and even delusional Bertie Ahern truly is.
