Cowen to be ditched to save Lisbon? Per rte.

Just on six one news. David Davin power links a poor performance on the 5th june to success in the vital lisbon referendum and that ff people could get him to be step aside.

On its merits, it seems a bit far fetched but could be used as an excuse by ambitious ministers to take him out and beat martin to it.

davin power considers a poor result to be the loss of two seats in europe and the by-elections and a sub-300 seats on local councils.
    Who's spin is this ?
If the banks are out for a bail,
and Lenny's efforts end up as a fail,
    when the Somer does come,
    to the Country they'll run,
And leave a Fine mess for the Gael.

Endinf the one Party (FF) state:

Who is leader of FF will make no difference to the lisbon referendum
Would you be likely to change your lisbon vote if Mick Martin was taoiseach? It would still be the same incompetent government with a different chairman

....and irrelevant in the context of the referendum

I was actually watching last Sunday's Week in Politics online this afternoon, and was struck by Martin Cullen's intervention in the middle of a discussion of the repercussions of a disastrous FF performance, to state that (I paraphrase) 'what is most vital and above all else in importance to this country is the passage of the Lisbon Treaty in October.'

It did get me thinking that he believes that a change of government, or at the very least Taoiseach, might be necessary to achieve this if FF really hit the ropes next month.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be leading the campaign on Lisbon II.

He will expect support from whoever is then leader of FF.

If the Taoiseach resigns, the government resigns. While there's precedent now for replacing one government within the lifetime of a Dail, there is certainly no precedent for two. There'd need to be a General Election.

Not constitutionally; nothing at all to stop FF changing leader.

Big business is desperate to see Lisbon forced through. If they want their puppet Cowen to go then he will have to go.Tony O'Reilly can have biffo sacked anytime he wants.

That was an extraordinary statement to make. In the govt's order of priorities, Lisbon now comes top of the class above and beyond the economy, the health-service, the €20 billion deficit, crime etc. It shows where Fianna Fáil's true loyalties lie - with Brussels to the subordination of domestic issues. Disgraceful.
