Tesco haven't created a single job in Ireland.

Every job in a Tesco store is a job taken from another smaller retailer, and if Tesco left, there would be a huge upswing in employment in Dunnes, SuperQuinn, SuperValu etc.

Tesco really adds nothing to the Irish economy.

Exactly. Afaik the only large retailer with a decent reputation for employee relations was Superquin. Dunnes was always the pits to work for - I should know . I once got fired from Dunnes for wearing a sweatshirt under my uniform in an unheated store in November.

Kelly was talking about out of town superstores and not Tesco in isolation and I'd agree with him. Whether it is Dunnes or Superquinn or whoever the out of town developments hurt communities.

if Tescos left the south, that would only encourage the other brands put their prices up.
So its a no-win situation for the consumer.

Still though, it's hardly worth screaming about O'Keefe when your own candidate is saying something very similar. Stopping these stores could also lead to job losses in the same way Tesco leaving Ireland could lead to job losses.

I happen to agree with both in a way.

The job losses are irrelevant to the argument. Its not like a multinational that exports, and moves to Poland.

These jobs are to serve the Irish grocery market and cannot be outsorced. If Tescos were to close other supermarkets would expand and the people would find new jobs in these supermarkets.

Also Tesco would sell off their old stores, or sell their Irish branch as a going concern.

There is also the social dimension to tesco. They are a vast multinational trying to impose a one size fits all idea onto the Irish market. To them we are another part of the UK and will treated as such with all that entails for our identity. If Tesco was replaced by smaller locally owned shops then it would be better for us all round.
