Fianna Fail risk Dail seat for Europe: TD Pat "the Cope" Gallagher to run!

So what's the strategy here ?

Send me to Europe and I'll give ye a bye election to get FF out of government ?

Sunday Times: Fianna Fail risk Dail seat for Europe
Party takes by-election gamble by asking Donegal TD Pat Gallagher to enter poll contest

Fianna Fail is to run the risk of another Dail by-election defeat in a desperate bid to hold onto its European seat in the North West constituency. The party has asked Pat “the Cope” Gallagher, the Donegal TD, to run as a second candidate in the European elections next month, knowing that the move could reduce the government’s slender Dail majority even further.

I think that they don't believe that they'll win; so no by-election.

He is their only hope of a seat in North West. If he doesn't win it, then FF win end up without a seat.

I did mention a day or two ago on http://www.politics.ie/fianna-fail/6...yrne-east.html that Cowen was pushing the Cope to run. He had already pushed a very reluctant Thomas Byrne to go in East.

Maybe they are expecting the OTHER FF canidate to be the main one and use Cope mainly to pick up votes in Donegal?

Lousy geographic spread...Mooney in Leitrim, Cope in Donegal.

Perhaps FF are looking forward to a by-election there because they have one of Gallagher's family members lined up to run. Or maybe there one of Mary Coughlan's children is ready to enter the family business!

Imagine someone in Clare having Pat the Cope represent them. The Election boundaries for Ireland West seriously need revised.

People in Longford & Westmeath have feel alienated in this present European election

Perhaps he has an older brother who needs to top up his pension?
