    1916 easter commemoration 2009

Was at the state commemoration today at the GPO, well organised and fairly well attended considering,my only query would be why dont the government advertise the event in the days before easter sunday, the only reason i new it was definitely on was i was checking the news on aertel earlier this morning and it told all about it, im sure there would be many thousands more proud citizens on o'connell st every easter sunday, as their were in 2006, if they bothered to tell everyone about it.

The event has been hollow hypocrisy for years, attended by a political elite who might as well go and p1ss on the graves of those who died for all the repect they have shown for the ideal of the Republic. Better to say a quiet prayer alone, much more sincere.

It's not the fault of the President or the Defence Forces that politicians turn up.
The commemoration should transcend party politics.

Whisht! The only people p1ssing on the graves are the ones that have carried out a murder campaign for the last 30 years against the wishes of the Irish people. I don't consider it hollow hypocrisy. Nor do many.

Next time, head off to one of the Easter commerations where hooded men appear, too afraid to show their face, celebrate those that murdered women and kids, fire a few shots and demand you obey them. Maybe you'll come out with a different opinion on hypocrisy then.

Good to see the legit political parties reclaiming the 1916 commerations from those that have debased and abused the notion of a Republic. Good to see the people joining in those celebrations. How that amounts to hyprocisy I dunno. Nor does anyone else that chose to take part.

The 1916 rebellion declared a 32 county Republic, It happened in response to violence against the Ulster Irish and used a flag founded in Belfast, there are obviously ironies for people who consider FF partitionist and have highjacked the periods significance for no other reason than the fact that it happened in Dublin and not Belfast.
The location of the rebellion was unimportant, what it called for was an end to British rule not a divided anglisised Ireland.
The southern counties still pretend that everything was a success, mission accomplished but its a lie - Ireland is still occupied.

The event was advertised by the Department of Defence in the national papers during the week.

The advert gave the time, location etc. along with when to arrive and where seating was provided, along with a brief note on how the ceremony would be conducted.

All members of the public were welcome to attend.

Over 2,000 attended and the bus routes had to be changed! Still, notwithstanding the previous poster's comments, I heard absolutely nothing about it until the morning itself.
A P.ie moderator stated this on June 25th 2010: P.ie tolerates very broad free speech, and thus allows sectarian bigotry etc

Well put St333ve. The southern counties have a wonderfully selective historical amnaesia.
We are all born mad. Some remain so.

Indeed, a shameful waste of money.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

In fairness, and official notice in the corner of a newspaper isn't great advertising. A plug on the news the day before wouldn't have gone astray.
