What does Fianna Fail stand for?

To me Fianna Fáil means

Being part of Irelands largest and most successful party

A party that was crucial in the Peace Process

A party that over the decades has protected and looked after the vunerable (although we've lost sight of that in the last 10 years). Fianna Fáil will always be seen as the first party to support our older population, the small farmer and the less well off.

Europe: Ireland is/was at the forefront of European affairs thanks to some FF members. Fianna Fáil is Irelands most known party outside of our waters.

Community: Fianna Fáil thrives to support a sense of community in rural and urban areas

Irish Heritage and Culture: Fianna Fáil has always supported the promotion of Irish Culture. It has promoted the Irish language throughout the country and helped fund our national games.

Fianna Fáil stands for Republicanism (although bit outdated now). Our party was founded on the basis of a treaty supported by a small majority in 1920's Ireland. The supporters of this treaty imprisoned 11,000 people for not supporting the treaty, tortured over 300 and executed almost 100 without substantal grounds.

Our party saw that the only way peace could be brought to our nation was by entering parliament. Fianna Fáil under the leadership of de Valera dismanteled the Anglo Irish Treaty giving us more independance.

Fianna Fáil is a community in itself. All sectors of society are seen in Fianna Fáil and the reality is 99% of members aim to benefit the country however a few bad apples over the years have spoiled it for the rest. However ask anyone involved in grassroots Fianna Fáil and they'll tell you the enjoyment they get out of it.

Im an FF member and here are a few of many reasons why i support the party.

Peace Process- Fianna Fail's work on the peace process has been fantastic and it has delievered huge benefits for the people of the north.

Europe- Fianna Fail realises that Ireland needs to be at the heart of Europe in order for us to get the benefit of the union.

Republicanism- I believe in the re-unification of Ireland by peaceful means and i believe Fianna Fail can deliever that.

Um, but for the last two points, most major parties in the Republic believe exactly the same.

So you're essentially saying that the only reason you vote for FF is because of the peace process. Fair enough, but (a) the peace process has come to some sort of completition and (b) does FF's handling of the peace process mean you should ignore their complete balls of as far as everything else in Irish society?

I agree with most of it, but some of it I have to think about. All in all I think you have it right.

Sheeple Sheeple, when times are good it's fine, otherwise, let's think again, same goes for Government, don't give the bad news, only the good.

Is this the first time that FF have had to cut the standard of living of the ordinary Joe and Jane? Educate me if I am wrong.

If you read the beginning of my post i saw they are a few of many reasons.

I have been a member since 2005 and I always have indentified with the party. My political heros are men like Sean Lemass and Albert Reynolds and these are men who inspired me to join Fianna Fail.

Fianna Fáil are only a reflection of the selfish, short-termist, and largely unprincipled outlook of at least half the population of the country. Fianna Fáil is only the product of an ingrained culture which has dominated this country for decades, and which has become rather nasty since the last remaining brake on that selfishness - Catholicism - was discarded a couple of decades ago. Fianna Fáil gave those people what they wanted, tomorrow wasn't given a second thought, and this is where we are now. It'll all happen again, and Fianna Fáil will be re-elected again and again. It's Ireland, it'll never change.

you gave irish territory away to the British for good . Thats no different to being a unionist . Partition is a crime and committing treason against the Irish nation as a crime . according to the Irish constitution put in place by fianna fail there is no country to reunite peacefully or otherwise . The Irish nation only consists of 26 counties . You dropped Irelands sovereign claim to even be a nation and accepted the British claim that the northern territory was part of the British nation instead . Furthermore your constitution doesnt even declare unity desirable much less likely

you lot sold your country down the river , to the brits , to the devlopers , to the banks and to the beuracrats in brussels. And to top it off you put a motorway through tara so spare us the pub patriot horses8it . Your party is a bunch of traitors and criminal whove engaged in the most serious criminal actions against the irish nation .

For me Fianna Fail just was a party to which i could look and say thats what i believe in. Fianna Fail is a broad church which includes many different groups but i believe that is a strength, it is never a bad thing to have different groups expressing differing points of view.

Merle- There is now a process for set out by way of referendum for the unification of Ireland also we are now moving forward with a 32 county economy which will removed barriers to a United Ireland, everytime a road is connected up with a North and South we are a step closer to a United Ireland.

Europe- Sure Merle why dont we go like Iceland and go it alone, sure little Ireland can take on China, America and India. We need to be in Europe for prosperity.

Republicanism- You think because Articles 2 and 3 are gone that matters. Its just words, i dont need a constitution or passport to tell me im Irish.

Your last point- I really take issue with people like you on your high horse saying who is Irish and who isnt, I will just tell you this you dont have any right at all to make distinctions like that.

I don't understand how joining the majority is in itself a valuable end to pursue. It makes nonsense of normal democratic processes as understood in other western countries, maybe this is the core of the problem with FF as I see it. Its supporters identify that FF=Ireland, why have any political processes at all if that's the case? Perhaps everybody in Ireland should just join FF and express their wishes by voting internally in the party?
