Brian Lenihan ranked the 2nd worst Finance Minister in Europe: FT

He was just pipped by Fernando Teixeira dos Santos of Portugal for the title of worst Finance Minister in Europe, although give him time, he is only 6 months in the job, plenty of time yet to get the title. You have to pity for the people of Portugal if they are reckoned to have someone worse than Brian Lenihan.

I wouldn't pay this much attention. If it has Peer Steinbruck at No. 2, it is not a serious survey in any sense of the word

Lenihan summed up his abilities himself when he uttered "Lawyers are not accountants" on TV recently. "Why the hell is he in the job then?" was my repsonse.

Non sequitur. The job is Minister for Finance, not Chief State Accountant.

Do you expect the Minister for Health to be a doctor? Or the Minister for Agriculture a farmer?

    Those wouldn't be bad ideas...
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

i'd expect competence and a firm understanding of economics from such a key ministery, basicaly someone whom would be a CEO / COO in the private sector of a large fortune 1000 company

A miserably confused survey. A secondary student would get an F mark for it due to the "methodology".

It associates macroeconomic performance for a time interval with the relevant minister for finance.

There is no explanation as to how/why these are correlated , for starters none of the ministers have much influence on monetary policy etc.

That said I don’t think Lenihan is much good – but this pseudo-scientific, new-age babble masquerading as professional analysis is most annoying.

Well I'm sure doctors and farmers would agree with you at least. The rest of the citizens might not be so happy.
