Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe in China

What was the reason for Minister O'Keefe to be a part of the trade mission to China. I understand the purpose the trade mission is to foster and improve trade links between both countries. Should it not just be economic ministries not education ministers travelling??????

Chinese students in Uk pay circa £30k per annum in fees to attend colleges there and thats before adding in living costs, add to the fact they will stay couple of years and then likely go on to University for another couple of years all fee paying.

Sending Education minister in a bid to foster more cooperation and build up this service sounds like good economic sense.

I presume he's there to promote the science\research part of his brief, and to sell Ireland as a location for Chinese students.

Yup bring over Chinese students, educate them in our ways and our industrial practises, teach them English, send them back to China, they set up factories based on what they have seen in Ireland and compete against us with lower cost rip offs of what we make and put our factories out of business..

It makes perfect sense really! I'm surprised anyone would question it.

Whats the worry about Batt being abroad ?

Sean Haugheys in charge now and if his impressive appearance on PrimeTime was anything to go by everything will be fine.

In fact id argue that Sean may even be as brilliant as Batt himself.

The future of the education system is in safe safe hands.

    this already discussed here.

Agree, why did the gov not send Mary "Palin" OR did the "Battman" know he was in for a rough ride and decided to exit stage left?

    When are they due back?

Mind you oireachtas will be open for business come WED for the next protest. Middle of mid term break though.Don't think the numbers will match the wrinklies and the spongers!!!

Would make sense if he hadnt last week told universities to CUT spending on advertising overseas....presumably the students will somehow stumble on the course they want by magic.

I concur. China is a growing super power and we should do everything we can to foster trade links.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

So, coherence in our approach would be good Bobert. A chinese student coming to do a postgrad in ireland will get an offer in late june or early july (when all get them) by and large. Most courses start in mid september. the students are ready to roll, but it can take 6-8 weeks for the embassy in Beijin to process a visa.... wow.
