    The uproar about these medical cards is interesting in that it indicates that there is now an acceptance of a certain level of medical care at least for the elderly regardless of how rich or poor they are.

    If that is accepted then the next question is how to fund it. Are the electorate prepared to pay the extra taxes required to fund it? It seems they are.

    The irony is that during the fat years, taxes were lowered boosting consumption and house inflation instead of availing of the opportunity to build up services which still lag below satisfactory levels.

    Thanks spidermom for that link.

    Over the years the government's ideologues have allowed banks and insurance companies to cast off all effective restraint,

    - and they have brought the ideology of 'competitionism' to such a ludicrous pitch that now the government may not even be permitted to negotiate with the doctors' representative body, when they need to do just that to save their skins.

    ISCP webpage & poll

    A chairde,

    I've put a webpage together for the Irish Senior Citizens' Parliament about the crisis arising from the Budget decision on medical cards for the over 70s.

    The page contains lots of information about the situation and a summary of the news coverage to date. I'm asking you to do some or all of the following:
    - vote on the poll on the page;
    - leave a comment letting us know what you think;
    - come to Wednesday's protest rally;
    - spread the word - forward this message to your friends, family & colleagues.

    If the government can get away with taking away a universal provision for health care for our older people, all our universal provisions are in danger. Pretty soon everything will be means tested. Its time to get angry!!

    Competition Authority man on RTE radio news now is a howl. Government can negotiate. IMO cannot negotiate. That seems to be about it. Seán O'Rourke gives up at that point. Man says he is only here two and a half years.

    How much does the Competition Authority cost us every year?

    As Shakespeare might have said, Budget in haste, Repent at leisure.

    Colm McCarthy (who has been around longer) confirmed the problem, and the fact that there doesn't appear to be an easy solution to it, since European competition law is involved as well.

    Does this mean James Reilly TD can be arrested and locked up, for his role in the (apparently) illegal acts???

    Reilly negotiated 7 years ago. The CA's high court ruling was only last year I think.
